#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The funny, sad, super-honest, all-true story of Chelsea Handler’s year of self-discovery—featuring a nerdily brilliant psychiatrist, a shaman, four Chow Chows, some well-placed security cameras, various family members (living and departed), friends, assistants, and a lot of edibles

A SKIMM READS PICK • “This will be one of your favorite books of all time.”—Amy Schumer

In a haze of vape smoke on a rare windy night in L.A. in the fall of 2016, Chelsea Handler daydreams about what life will be like with a woman in the White House. And then Donald Trump happens. In a torpor of despair, she decides that she’s had enough of the privileged bubble she’s lived in—a bubble within a bubble—and that it’s time to make some changes, both in her personal life and in the world at large.

At home, she embarks on a year of self-sufficiency—learning how to work the remote, how to pick up dog shit, where to find the toaster. She meets her match in an earnest, brainy psychiatrist and enters into therapy, prepared to do the heavy lifting required to look within and make sense of a childhood marked by love and loss and to figure out why people are afraid of her. She becomes politically active—finding her voice as an advocate for change, having difficult conversations, and energizing her base. In the process, she develops a healthy fixation on Special Counsel Robert Mueller and, through unflinching self-reflection and psychological excavation, unearths some glittering truths that light up the road ahead.

Thrillingly honest, insightful, and deeply, darkly funny, Chelsea Handler’s memoir keeps readers laughing, even as it inspires us to look within and ask ourselves what really matters in our own lives.

Advance praise for Life Will Be the Death of Me

“You thought you knew Chelsea Handler—and she thought she knew herself—but in her new book, she discovers that true progress lies in the direction we haven’t been.”—Gloria Steinem

“I always wondered what it would be like to watch Chelsea Handler in session with her therapist. Now I know.”—Ellen DeGeneres

“I love this book not just because it made me laugh or because I learned that I feel the same way about certain people in politics as Chelsea does. I love this book because I feel like I finally really got to know Chelsea Handler after all these years. Thank you for sharing, Chelsea!”—Tiffany Haddish

"Got it this morning as soon as it came out - been waiting for it to come out! My day off so I finished it in one sitting. This one is the best book yet! It’s so much more than what you think it might be. I laughed out loud at certain parts (like I knew I would) but I never expected to tear up in other parts. You did a really great job - thanks!"

Life Will Be the Death of Me and you too! Chelsea Handler 9780525511779 Books Reviews

  • I'm giving this book a 5 star review even though I haven't read it. Do you know why? To off set The reviewers below who gave it one star even though they didn't read the book. Just because you don't like Chelsea doesn't mean you should give something a badd review that's not right people. Chelsea keep fighting the good fight. And you're appearance onthe Howard Stern show today was fantastic
  • I have read all of Chelsey’s books and preordered this one. Read it immediately in one sitting. I think the people that are off put by her “touting her wealth” is missing the point. We have eyes, we know she is successful. Quite the opposite I think she was trying to find out, while all of her success/money is great, why isn’t she still satisfied and at peace. Coming from a large family I can relate to her upbringing (we also laughed a lot and still do) so I very much enjoyed their dynamics. So very sad she lost her very close brother, I can’t even imagine. Overall I liked the book, appreciate she is wanting to “do better” by becoming involved. A lot of talk about her dogs, which didn’t really do much for me, but realize they are her unconditional loves. I also know I will be in the minority here. Book was sort of disjointed, much like my review. Ha
  • I think the other reviews on here are reviewing Chelsea Handler as a personality from the past, rather than her current book. This book is a little less funny but a little more real and in touch as she discusses working through the repressed pain from her brother's death and father's subsequent absence. In this book Chelsea acknowledges her bouts of out-of-touch reality in the recent past and struggles with finding herself and true meaning in life. All with that satirical slight self deprecating humor I've come to love from her books! This book has already inspired me and motivated me to take another hard look at my own self and the world we live in. Props Chelsea, I really fell in love with your book and appreciate your honesty and vulnerability. And of course your humor. You really show that humor can be a subtle and effective art.

  • Although I thoroughly enjoyed "Uganda Be Kidding Me", Chelsea Handler's new memoir, "Life Will Be the Death of Me ... and you too!", is by far my favorite literary work from the comedienne. A transparent look into her memory, Handler leads readers on a hilarious, intelligent and candid tour of her life pre and post-election. From the death of her brother to her infatuation with Robert Mueller, Handler's memoir is unique, entertaining and thought-provoking. If you enjoy comedy and candor, "Life Will Be the Death of Me ... and you too!" must be on your summer reading list.
  • I rarely read a book in one day. Chelsea had me from the first page. I laughed, I cried (for her and for myself) while reading about her quest to have a deeper understanding of herself. Her honesty and vulnerability were refreshing and her insights made me realize I am also ready to dig deeper. A reminder that it's never too late.
  • “Through her intensely vulnerable, honest, and hilarious reflections Chelsea shows us more than just her insides. She shows us ourselves.” —Amy Schumer

This is the first book by this Author I have read. So, I am neural in my review of being a follower or critic.
I have possibly survived my own Jewish, emotionally detached husband but I was not really like Chelsea’s Mom. I was not a Mormon...but wanted to live with an Amish family once to learn to be simpler.
After seeing Chelsea on Ellen talking about her book, I realized I had a crush on Robert Mueller, too. Rather than feeling wrong, I needed to dive deeper into those feelings. I ordered the book for both of my adult daughters and as usual got one for me last.
I realized while reading the book that no one has ever given me a fresh picked orange 🍊... I have however, ugly cried that way without witnesses.
I never saw my Mom ugly cry and I am not sure if Chelsea ever saw her Mom cry like that either. But, I had seen my Mom as I was growing up, come from her room with ugly cry red marks on the outer corners of her eyes. As she smiled singing, “Que Sera Sera.”
I have had and still have pseudo children pets. I have experienced Chelsea’s love for them. Some of her crawling on the floor moments hit home for me, but mine were as untrained as I am. And, I didn’t have a Todd or Larry or Fred. I had and have to pick up dog poo myself.
But, I did survive an emotionally detached Jewish parenting husband and lived on the East Coast. Secretly wanting to runaway to California.
I never had a Dan either. But, I have lost my brother, father, mother and pets..and probably have some unexpressed grief that comes in waves without a raft.
So, I will get an Orange 🍊 and peel it today by stabbing it with my fingernails while ugly crying or just to see if I can peel one that way.

I loved the book. You will find parts of yourself in it somewhere and I believe the intent of the book in Chelsea’s unveiling was to hand you an orange, too.
  • The best
